Chief Community Health & Grants Officer

Doug Michael Joined the EMHS Leadership Team in 2013, as the first Chief Community Health and Grants Officer. Doug is responsible for setting the strategic course for community health improvement and building population and public health capacity into the day to day functioning of our dynamic healthcare system.

Doug leads the EMHS vision to measurably improve the health of all Maine people by accelerating the deployment of innovative community health improvement strategies that address population health priorities. He leads team efforts to build collaborative community partnerships, leverage strategic resources, and deliver impactful health initiatives in coordination with healthcare, community, and public health partners.

With more than 20 years of community health improvement experience, Doug is a strong leader whose innovative style, collaborative spirit, and passion for improving public health has been instrumental in developing creative solutions for our communities’ toughest health challenges.
The road to here 
 A native New Englander, Doug is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and the New York Medical College, where he earned his Master’s in Public Health with a focus on Health Policy and Management.
Prior to joining EMHS, Doug served as executive director and founder of Healthy Acadia, a charitable community health organization serving Maine’s rural Hancock and Washington counties. Through his leadership at Healthy Acadia, Doug fostered strong community partnerships and mobilized collective action resulting in lasting community changes making it possible for rural populations to lead healthier lives. In addition, he has led grant seeking activity that has resulted in many national awards to benefit the Down East community.
Doug’s other past experience includes president and founder of Voyageurs, a successful global travel business providing cultural and ecological tourism, community partnership director at Mount Desert Island Hospital, as well as health program manager and exercise physiologist at Chemical Bank Corporation in New York City.
Doug enjoys working with others on community improvement, and has served on the governing bodies and advisory boards of several non-profit community organizations.  He was appointed and served on the Maine Public Health Workgroup, a statewide group tasked by the Governor’s office to design a viable model for enhancing the local delivery of essential public health services throughout Maine.
Doug currently volunteers on the Board of Directors for the Down East Aids Network, and is President-elect of the Maine Public Health Association.

Proudest Accomplishments
Doug’s greatest professional satisfaction arises from building and exercising the collective muscle needed to achieve community health improvement. Doug was recently honored at the twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Maine Public Health Association as the surprise recipient of the President’s Award for Public Health Service, Maine’s top public health honor.
