Iyad Sabbagh, MD, MBA

Vice President, Chief Quality Officer, and Associate Chief Medical Officer


As vice president, chief quality officer and associate chief medical officer, Dr. Sabbagh is responsible for system performance on quality, patient experience and population health. He leads the newly established quality office and is in charge of building the structure to enhance the measurement and improvement of patient care quality.

The road to here

Before being appointed to this position in October 2014, Dr. Sabbagh was senior medical director for Beacon Health and primary care provider at Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) Internal Medicine. Through his leadership as senior medical director, Beacon Health, EMHS’ accountable care organization, made significant strides as a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Pioneer program. He led physician leaders to surpass the quality goals for Medicare and commercial contracts, achieving a top 4 in quality metrics within two years in the program. In addition, Dr. Sabbagh established a state of the art care coordination program, implementing the program network-wide and achieving a 5 percent shared saving in the first year.  Dr. Sabbagh also has served as medical director of EMMC’s Outpatient Care Management, and lead physician at EMMC Husson Internal Medical Practice. He has served on the Board of Directors for Maine Network for Health.

In addition to his medial doctorate, Dr. Sabbagh earned an MBA from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 2007. He has participated and led several grant projects and research on healthcare quality, including the three-year “Bangor Beacon Community Project to Improve Patient Care and Reduce Healthcare Costs via the Meaningful Use of Health Information Technology.”

Proudest Accomplishment

Dr. Sabbagh’s proudest accomplishment is helping to lead the development of Beacon Health (EMHS’ ACO) and the ambulatory care coordination team. Beacon Health is improving patient experience and the health of Maine people with chronic conditions through care coordination and patient engagement.
