Steven M. Berkowitz Appointed EMHS Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive

Brewer, Maine – (August 7, 2018) – EMHS is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven M. Berkowitz, MD, FACC to the position of senior vice president and chief physician executive.
In making the announcement, Michelle Hood, president and CEO of EMHS said Dr. Berkowitz was selected from a national search process which brought forward several excellent candidates. She also pointed out that Dr. Berkowitz has been at EMHS on an interim basis for the past 18 months and is well-known as an extraordinary member of the system’s senior team. “Steve’s exceptional qualities and rich experiences in the areas of medical group formation and management, population health and managed care, as well as quality and patient safety make him extremely well qualified for this position. I look forward to continuing to work closely with him,” said Hood.
As EMHS’ interim chief physician executive, Dr. Berkowitz worked closely with medical leadership at the system’s nine hospitals and served as president of the statewide physician medical group, which has more than 750 members. “I am beyond thrilled to be able to remain at EMHS in a permanent position. In the year and a half that I’ve been here on an interim basis I found in EMHS a healthcare organization that is dedicated to delivering quality and safe care and have met caregivers who are among the best I’ve worked with. I’ve also found Mainers to be warm and welcoming and I am so pleased to now call Maine home.”
Before arriving at EMHS in January 2017, Dr. Berkowitz served as chief medical officer of St. David’s Healthcare in Austin, Texas, which earned the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2014.
