Congratulations to 2018 POD Class!

If there was any doubt that EMHS is brimming with insightful, innovative, and hardworking employees, then the inaugural 2018 EMHS Professional and Organizational Development (POD) class has put that doubt to rest.

On Wednesday, August 22, 14 groups of EMHS POD participants presented their impressive research and recommendations for solving some of the most pressing issues in our organization that were submitted to the class by EMHS senior leadership. POD groups presented to these leaders at the Gracie Theatre at Husson University on patient safety, hiring U.S. military veterans, retaining employees within the first year of hire, and other topics. This day-long event that was the culmination of a year’s worth of work and leadership training.

The POD program is a new partnership between EMHS and Husson University in which 100 class members who applied were selected from a variety of job roles—both clinical and nonclinical—throughout our 12,000-employee organization. A prestigious group to be sure, these participants received a tailored curriculum designed to enhance their knowledge of the healthcare industry, improve leadership skills, and empower them to solve the big challenges in our industry all while having the added opportunity to convert this learning into college credit.

“The POD program has been a tremendous opportunity as an employee,” Jennean Hunter, LMSW, care manager, Mercy Hospital in Portland, told us. “With each class, I brought back skills I could apply immediately to my work. I was so impressed with the extraordinary quality of professors from Husson University. They not only brought their academic expertise to the program, but a tremendous amount of world experience tailored to our goals.”

EMHS president and CEO, Michelle Hood, FACHE, was there to congratulate the graduating class of 2018 and present to them their certificates of achievement. In her opening remarks, Michelle said she was reminded of the class when recently reading an article in the Harvard Business Review called, Organizational Grit. “I think there is a lot about this [article] that speaks to who you all are.” She went on to read a passage,“High achievers have extraordinary stamina. Even if they’re already at the top of their game, they’re always striving to improve. Even if their work requires sacrifice, they remain in love with what they do. Even when easier paths beckon, their commitment is steadfast. We call this remarkable combination of strengths: grit.”
Dozens of proud POD graduates walked across the stage to receive their certificate and celebrate the grit it took to get where they are today knowing more about our organization, healthcare, and themselves than they did one year ago.

Congratulations to the 2018 POD class!
