Two EMHS Member Hospitals Awarded Top Government Quality Rating

The federal government awarded its highest possible quality rating of five stars today to Mercy Hospital and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, making them two of only five hospitals in Maine to receive this designation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). The ratings are based on nearly 60 quality measures spanning everything from patient experience to the value and outcomes of services provided.

According to CMS, Medicare.gov’s Hospital Compare tool, which was updated today to include new ratings, has information about the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals. Hospital Compare is used by consumers to find local hospitals and compare the quality of their care.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our employees, medical staff, and volunteers who work hard every day to provide patients with the best possible experience,” said Charlie Therrien, president of Mercy Hospital. “This work continues to be inspired and guided by the compassionate care first established by the Sisters of Mercy nearly one hundred years ago. Whether it’s the comfort of Mercy’s private hospital rooms or our patient-centered approach, we’re pleased CMS and our patients have recognized us as a place to seek high-quality care in the greater Portland community.”

“We are extremely proud of these achievements," explained MCMH’s chief nursing officer Ardelle Bigos MSN, RN, CMSRN.  "Our providers, nurses, and staff all work hard every day to ensure patient safety is a priority and I am thrilled that they are being recognized for providing excellent care to our community.”

Today’s 5-star government rating comes on the heels of an announcement by The Leapfrog Group in October that Mercy and MCMH were also awarded “A” grades for keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the country.  Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC), the Aroostook Medical Center (TAMC), and Inland Hospital, the only other member hospitals that were eligible to be included in that Leapfrog rating, also received “A” grades.
