Three EMHS rural hospitals earn national award for quality

EMHS is pleased to announce that three of our member organizations are among a select group of rural hospitals across the country that received the highest marks for quality and safety by the Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization that conducts surveys to assess hospital performance.
The Aroostook Medical Center (TAMC), Inland Hospital, and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital were three of just 18 rural hospitals nationwide to receive a top rural hospital rating in the survey results released today. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive.
“While receiving an award such as this is certainly nice, it is what the award represents … the quality of the work we do here every day—that is truly meaningful. Recognition such as this validates what we are accomplishing as a healthcare organization,” said Jay Reynolds, MD, chief medical officer at TAMC.
In commenting about Inland Hospital’s recognition, John Dalton, president of Inland Hospital commented, “We are humbled by this award. It is a true testament to the dedication of all Inland staff and providers who keep patients safe and care for them as if they were family. I consider it a privilege to work with the skilled, compassionate people who are Inland.”
The selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures established to prevent errors.
The Leapfrog Group also posts Hospital Safety Grades in the fall of each year.  The five EMHS member hospitals eligible to be included in that rating, Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC), Maine Coast Memorial Hospital (MCMH), Mercy Hospital, TAMC, and Inland Hospital, all received ‘A’ grades.

About The Leapfrog Group
Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American healthcare. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.
