New EMHS Board Chair

Barry McCrum, owner and president of McCrum and Company and previous senior vice president for Government and Public Affairs at Time Warner Cable has been elected as the next chair of the EMHS Board of Directors. The election was held during the board’s annual meeting June 14 at the EMHS Home Office in Brewer. Stephen Rich, of Glenburn, was elected vice-chair.

McCrum, of Mars Hill, succeeds Evelyn Silver, PhD of Dedham, Maine. He served as vice chair of the EMHS board from 2015 to 2017. McCrum stated that it is both exciting and challenging to be moving into the chair role during such a dynamically changing time in healthcare. “Regardless of what changes are made to the existing structure, we must not lose sight of our core values to our patients and communities. As a system, we must continue to strive for the best care we can deliver, while always working to keep healthcare affordable for all. We, as a board, take these values to heart and will do our utmost to live up to them."

Rich retired as president and CEO of Bangor-based firm, WBRC Architects/Engineers, in 2013. During his 30 year tenure at WBRC, he also served as chief operating officer, firm principal, project manager, and project architect. He now shares his time and energy enjoying family, his farm, golf, and volunteer service for a variety of non-profit healthcare, education and business entities.

In addition to a new chair and vice-chair, three new board directors were elected: Julie Dawson Williams, realtor and general manager for ERA Dawson Bradford Co. Realtors in Bangor; Lynn Lombard, retired vice president and director of Human Resources for MMG Insurance Company from Caribou; and Daniel P. Thornton, Maine president and senior commercial lender for Peoples’ United Bank in Portland. EMHS also thanked the following board members stepping down: Evelyn Silver, PhD of Dedham, Danielle Ripich, PhD of Biddeford, and Nichi Farnham of Bangor.

Along with the slate of directors, new corporators were also elected at the June annual meeting. More than two hundred people from across the state serve as EMHS corporators. This group of community members provides oversight of the EMHS Board, participates in educational programs on healthcare, and together with the board, elects both directors and fellow corporators for EMHS.
