Michael Whelan named System Vice President of Facilities and Supply Chain

12/16/2015
EMHS president and CEO, M. Michelle Hood, FACHE is pleased to announce Michael Whelan has joined EMHS as the first system vice president of Facilities and Supply Chain. In this new role, under the office of the chief financial officer, Whelan will oversee all of facilities and supply chain management, real estate, security, environmental services, biomedical engineering, construction, and renovation projects. In addition, he will serve as chair of the EMHS Environment of Care Team (safety committee) and will direct the overall maintenance and repair operations for EMHS.

Michelle Hood commented, “We look forward to the talent and skill that Michael will bring to our team. His broad based experience as a senior facilities support services executive will serve EMHS well as we look to more fully align and strengthen our facilities operations across EMHS.”

Whelan is a trained clinical engineer and experienced in change management. He received his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and Master of Science in clinical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Whelan’s more notable achievements include negotiating a memorandum of understanding with the State of Massachusetts that allowed the University of Massachusetts Medical Center to construct its first new building since the hospital’s original construction and creating a nationally recognized support services response center at the Henry Ford Health System.

In his current role at St. Peter’s Health Partners, Mike is proud of the level of “system integration” his team has achieved following their merger of three health systems in Albany, New York. Whelan commented, “I am looking forward to moving to Maine and becoming a member of the EMHS team. By working collaboratively with my new colleagues, I feel my contributions can make a difference in helping to provide a safe and effective care environment—one that improves the experience of both the patients and caregivers.” Whelan will assume this role on February 15. EMHS member organizations share common values and work to ensure delivery of the right care, at the right time, and in the right place. Together we’re stronger.
