Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and EMHS Complete Affiliation

9/30/2015

Ellsworth and Brewer, Maine – Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and EMHS (Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems) have received all necessary regulatory approvals and have completed their affiliation, making Maine Coast the ninth hospital member of EMHS, effective October 1.

In August 2014, Maine Coast and EMHS entered into a Letter of Intent to commence discussions toward a closer relationship. Maine Coast and EMHS in February signed a Definitive Agreement to form a strategic alignment.

“Nearly 60 years after the hospital was founded, becoming part of EMHS will help to secure local access to high-quality healthcare in Ellsworth and surrounding communities for another six decades,” said Adin Tooker, chair of the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. “In EMHS, we have found a like-minded organization to join, one that matches our commitment to Ellsworth and surrounding communities.”

Patients in Hancock and western Washington counties will benefit as Maine Coast Memorial Hospital integrates into EMHS.

Facebook-timeline-image-signing.jpg“By affiliating with EMHS, Maine Coast will realize operating efficiencies, better access to capital, and enhanced health information technology as our integration into EMHS moves forward,” said Charlie Therrien, president and CEO of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. “These enhancements will enable Maine Coast to provide more services, and more complex services, to patients close to home.”

Maine Coast Memorial Hospital expects to continue to enhance its clinical quality by adopting EMHS’ clinical best practices and protocols, its advanced electronic health records, and its remote care services such as telemedicine.

As close partners within EMHS, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital will be able to expand collaboration among medical staffs, recruit more physicians, and strengthen service lines across the entire service area to expand access to quality care close to home. Both hospitals will be able to draw on service and support offerings from across EMHS.

“We are proud to welcome Maine Coast as the ninth hospital member organization of EMHS. And we’re eager to begin to work more closely together to serve Ellsworth and surrounding communities,” said M. Michelle Hood, FACHE, president and CEO of EMHS. “The affiliation builds on our partnership in the EMHS/Beacon Health statewide network, which provides accountable care across Maine. Together, we will further strengthen the continuity of care for patients that receive care at both Maine Coast and other EMHS members, such as Blue Hill or Eastern Maine Medical Center, from the many physicians who practice at Maine Coast and at EMHS hospitals.”

With the affiliation complete, Therrien added, “The opportunity before us is to work together to ensure and enhance access to efficient, high-quality healthcare in Hancock and western Washington counties for generations to come.”
