Silver is New Chair of the EMHS Board

Brewer, Maine – (July 28, 2014) – Evelyn S. Silver, PhD, a retired senior advisor to the president at the University of Maine, has been elected chair of the EMHS Board of Directors. The election was during the EMHS annual meeting held June 11 at EMHS Home Office in Brewer. Barry D. McCrum of Mars Hill was elected vice-chair.

Silver, of Dedham, succeeds P. James Nicholson, CPA of China, Maine. She previously served as vice-chair of the EMHS Board from 2011 to 2014. Silver stated that she is moving in to the chair’s role at an exciting and pivotal time. “The challenge for a system like ours is to maintain our high quality of care while reducing costs. Now that our governance structure is fully integrated among our 12 member organizations across the system, I see EMHS as setting a high bar as a role model for other aspects of healthcare service integration.” Silver also added that she is excited to be working with talented and passionate EMHS leaders like CEO and President, M. Michelle Hood, FACHE, and chief medical officer, Robert Thompson, MD. Silver said she is also looking forward to watching the very good work being done on quality throughout the system climb to even higher levels as EMHS strives to achieve its vision to be a nationally recognized model of excellence in healthcare by 2020.

In addition to a new chair and vice-chair, three new board directors were elected. They are Jim Donnelly, executive VP of Machias Savings Bank in Brewer, Anne Perry, a registered nurse and healthcare instructor from Washington County, and Danielle Ripich, PhD, president of the University of New England, who adds a strong voice from southern Maine. Along with the slate of directors, new corporators were also elected at the June annual meeting. More than two-hundred people from across the state serve as EMHS corporators. They provide oversight of the EMHS Board, participate in educational programs on healthcare, and together with the board, elect both directors and fellow corporators for EMHS.
