Erik Steele, DO, EMHS Chief Medical Officer Accepts New Job in Ohio

(BREWER, ME) – March 13, 2013 - Erik Steele, DO, EMHS chief medical officer, has announced his decision to take a senior role with Summa Health in Akron, Ohio. Erik will assume the responsibility of being the chief medical officer for Summa, with a formal structure of working as a close partner to their system CEO.
“While this represents a loss for EMHS,” states M. Michelle Hood, EMHS CEO, “we are proud of Erik as he takes on this exciting new growth opportunity. Summa is a large system that includes eight hospitals, as well as a health plan. Like EMHS, Summa is embracing health reform and making significant changes to the delivery of care in the competitive Ohio market.”
Dr. Steele first came to EMHS in 1988 as a resident in EMMC’s Family Practice residency, where he also became faculty immediately after graduation, a role he has continued on a part-time basis up until today. He held several administrative positions at EMMC in emergency, trauma care and other acute care areas, becoming vice president of Patient Care Services in 2002. He moved to the EMHS Home Office in 2005 as the first EMHS chief medical officer.
“My experiences in EMHS have been extraordinary,” says Dr. Steele. “The organization is full of talented, smart people who always want to do the right thing. The people of EMHS have trained me, inspired me, and I will take that knowledge and inspiration to Ohio with me.”
His formal departure is as yet uncertain, but it will likely be in the month of May 2013.
