EMHS Vice President Business Development to Retire

Brewer, ME – (September 30, 2013) - Jerry Whalen, vice president for EMHS Business Development for the past 15 years, has announced his retirement, effective March  28, 2014. Throughout his tenure, Whalen has been instrumental in guiding EMHS’ strategic planning process through its growth and evolution as well as its internal and external communication, community health and marketing programs. Whalen was instrumental in fostering employee innovation initiatives throughout the organization and led efforts to implement multi-county community health outreach services. He also led pioneering efforts focused on community health needs assessments. In addition, Whalen represented EMHS on a variety of local and economic development boards and committees including the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, the Bangor Region Economic Development Alliance and Mobilize Eastern Maine.

Michelle Hood, FACHE, EMHS president and CEO, commented, “We have been fortunate to have Jerry as part of our leadership team, and much of EMHS’ current statewide success is attributed to his proactive, collaborative nature and dedication to improving access to needed healthcare resources in all our Maine communities. His leadership and commitment to the Bangor region has helped our community become a better place in which to live and work.”
 
As EMHS positions itself to better serve the healthcare needs of the people of Maine, it is “re-inventing” some of the functions within its own organization and Affiliated Healthcare Systems, a member of EMHS. In conjunction with Whalen’s retirement, Hood has also announced the following leadership changes:
  • Suzanne Spruce has assumed the role of EMHS chief communications officer.
  • Miles Theeman, current president and CEO of Affiliated Healthcare Systems, will assume responsibilities as EMHS vice president and chief sales and marketing officer.
  • Scott Oxley, vice president for EMHS Corporate Services will assume responsibility for AHS’ legacy and joint venture companies.
  • A chief community health and grants officer is currently being recruited.
 
“These changes are consistent with EMHS commitment to remain ahead of the dramatic shifts in healthcare delivery nationwide,” says Hood. “As we are met with new challenges and opportunities, we must plan ahead to ensure we have the best talent and leadership structure to address the ever-changing dynamics in healthcare. In doing so, we aim to be well-positioned to not only meet the health needs of our communities, but to be a nationally recognized model of excellence in healthcare.”
