EMHS Hospitals Earn National Recognition for Quality

Brewer, ME – (December 5, 2013) - Four EMHS hospitals have been named as Top Rural Hospitals by the Leapfrog Group. Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville, Inland Hospital in Waterville, and Sebasticook Valley Health in Pittsfield are among nine hospitals in Maine and 22 nationwide honored with the quality award. Leapfrog measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors.
In addition, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Inland Hospital, TAMC in Presque Isle, and EMHS’ newest member, Mercy in Portland all received an “A” grade in Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score released last month. “A” is the highest rating a hospital can receive in the safety score which assesses how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries, and infections. It is important to note that Leapfrog does not include critical access and behavioral health hospitals in its Hospital Safety Score survey.
EMHS president and CEO, M. Michelle Hood, FACHE congratulated the many team members at each of the EMHS member hospitals for their exceptional efforts to achieve this honor. “I want to especially compliment the EMHS Clinical Coordinating Committee and chair Mike Palumbo, DO (Inland Hospital’s chief medical officer) for outstanding leadership of EMHS’ quality, patient safety, and vision. I am immensely proud that this work is raising the bar for all Maine hospitals.” More information on Leapfrog programs is available at www.leapfroggroup.org
