EMHS Welcomes Michael Donahue to New Role

BREWER, ME - (January 18, 2012) – EMHS president and CEO M. Michelle Hood, FACHE is pleased to announce that Michael Donahue, MBA has accepted a position with EMHS effective immediately. In his new role, Donahue will continue work he initiated in 2011 associated with EMHS' preparedness for healthcare reform. In addition, he will engage EMHS provider groups and other healthcare professionals, regulatory agencies, payers, and employers in designing consumer directed services for the future. A major imperative for this new role is operation of Beacon Health, LLC – what EMHS calls the organizational model which will support its new designation as a Pioneer Accountable Care Organization.

In making the announcement, Hood said she was thrilled that Donahue accepted the job. "Mike has a proven record of being able to understand complex issues. He is well-suited to lead our Beacon Health initiative and I look forward to working more closely with him." As vice president of Physician Practices at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Donahue worked to expand EMMC's physician enterprise, and grow the medical center's primary and specialty care practices. That experience, commented Hood, will serve the entire system well as EMHS continues to develop new models of health care delivery. "More than 60 percent of our current revenue comes from Medicare and MaineCare. Our Beacon Health initiative allows EMHS and its collaborators a strong voice in the architecture of what future health care delivery and reimbursement will look like."

Donahue said he is looking forward to his new duties, and is pleased that EMHS is already a leader in this area. "We have many of the necessary tools in place to make Beacon Health a success, such as leading edge clinical information technology, the Bangor Beacon Community care coordination model, and health plan incentives that are proven to work." Donahue added that his goal through Beacon Health is "to build a program that helps people live as healthy a life as possible."

In December of last year, EMHS was one of 32 organizations nationwide to be invited to participate in the Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) demonstration project through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Pioneer ACO Model is intended to improve the care delivered to Medicare patients. The model is expected to transform the healthcare delivery as its innovative design is adopted by other insurance companies, including commercial payers and state Medicaid programs. Currently within EMHS, that means approximately 9,000 people who receive Medicare benefits, and who see primary care providers in our system are eligible to participate. Participating EMHS hospitals and primary care offices are in the process of notifying patients of their eligibility.
