EMHS Receives $26,000 to Combat Childhood Obesity

(Brewer, Me) – March 12, 2012 – EMHS is pleased to announce that the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation LLC has awarded EMHS with $26,000 for the Youth Health Lifestyle Program (YHLP). YHLP was created in 2008 as a childhood obesity prevention project. The program uses easy to remember consistent healthy lifestyle messaging throughout our communities in the form of 5-2-1-0: Five or more fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of screen time; one or more hours of physical activity; and zero sugary drinks, more water and low-fat milk.

Lee Averill, coordinator for the EMHS Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program says, "We are grateful that the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation recognizes the problem of childhood obesity in this region. Because of their generosity, EMHS has been able to provide much needed resources and tools to children in Aroostook, Washington, Kennebec, Hancock, Piscataquis, Penobscot, and Somerset counties."

The funding provided by Anthem has benefiting local communities through community and staff education, the creation of community toolkits and materials, and sustaining community partnerships. To learn more about YHLP and 5-2-1-0, visit www.emh.org/5210.
